ESports and Virtual Motor racing is truly one of the fastest growing segments in the sports world. With the almost daily advancements in technology, the lines between these two worlds is blurring, making it a smaller and smaller leap to get from the virtual world into a real race car.
There are games that allow racing artificial intelligent (AI) or computer generated and controlled drivers such as Forza, Project Cars, etc. Some of those also online capabilities.
However, the most recognized simulator that allows head to head competition against real world human drivers with all the advantages and disadvantages of us humans is Iracing. That is where probably 90% of my experience has come from.

Many full time professional racers use this venue to train, learn new tracks, or track familiarization prior to a race, practice to keep their skills sharp, and also work on race craft with other similarly motivated drivers or friends.
Amateur and club racers use virtual racing for the same reasons. It is also a MUCH cheaper way to get seat time on track rather than paying for track or testing days, and car maintenance.
